Andreea and Bernd travel a lot and have already been to Romania; more exactly in Transylvania and Moldova.
Now was the time to take a look at northern Romania: to walk through the famous wooden gates in the timeless villages of Maramures, to enjoy the silence of the wooden churches, but also the volcanic Creasta Cocosului and the majestic Rodnei Mountains .
Despite bad weather announcements, we have mostly managed to avoid the rain and get to know the nature, the people and the culture of this region.
Adventure, cosiness but also effort made our journey and memories more colorful. On the first day I was “lucky” enough to get bitten by a shepherd dog during a mountain run. Thankfully, it was not that bad, but led to a few more organizational challenges.
Still snow-covered mountains made our hikes more challenging, but we also walked leisurely through valleys with clear streams, beautiful forests with few people, and sometimes we had to take shelter, waiting for some thunderstorm to pass by.
In the small town of Sighet, near the Ukrainian border, we experienced the oppressive silence of the former prison in Sighet, which today is a museum and memorial to the victims of communism.
The rest of the trip eased us a bit. We made a short trip to the Ukraine to drink a beer and get our passport stamped, we visit the Merry Cemetery in Sapanta and Peri monastery, which left further nice memories.
